Tips For Self-Care

Hey Guys,

Yesterday started out as a pretty good day; I was feeling a lot better compared to how I was the past few days (health wise), work was fairly quiet, and I had actually gotten home at a decently early hour (which if you know me and my hectic schedule, that rarely happens nowadays). After I got home, however, things went downhill quick and unfortunately, it was one of those things that REALLY just ends up ruining your entire day altogether…..

I’m not going to get into detail about it because it’s more on the personal side and something to discuss in a later post if at all, BUT because of having a shitty end to the day, I thought it was the perfect time to put out THIS post which, as you saw from the title, is:

TIPS FOR SELF-CARE! 💆🏻‍♀️🎉

Self-care is any action or activity that we do which helps us take a step back from our responsibilities for a few seconds, minutes or hours in order to care of our mental, emotional, and physical health.

It can literally be anything. Anything that helps make you feel good and rejuvenated to continue to kick-ass at work, or while doing your chores, or whatever the case is.

I thought this was the perfect time because whenever you’re in a shitty mood like I was yesterday, aside from obviously kind of wanting to just do your own thing and be left alone by everyone, don’t you to some extent end up wanting to do things that will somehow cheer you up and make you feel better? Because I know I sure do, even if it means doing them alone.

Now, everyone is obviously different and likes/prefers different things to make them happy and feel good, but I figure I can share with you guys some of the things I typically like to do when I’m down (including what I did yesterday), that usually end up bringing me out of my funk in hopes that maybe it could help you do the same now or in the future for yourself.

OR maybe you’re not in a funk at all, and maybe you just want some things to help fill up your free-time that’ll still make you happy, but also feel productive…these ‘tips’, although they’re more suggestions of things to do then actually tips, can be used for any of the above.

  1. WRITE. Usually whenever I’m in a funk or have any free-time at all is normally when I catch up on things like my blog or book. Writing soothes me SO much and usually ends up making me feel like a new person whenever I’m done. Whether it’s in my notebook, on sticky notes or written in the notes on my phone, you’ll always catch me jotting things down whenever I get a chance. It’s soothing to be able to jot down whatever it is I may be thinking about in the moment (not every single second of the day obviously, but if I feel it’s important and that I may want to go back to it later on).

2. READ. Unfortunately, I don’t always find the time to be able to do this, but when I DO…it’s the best. I completely tune everything out and just focus on the book I’m reading; the characters, the situation going on, whatever it may be at the time, to the point where I don’t even want to sleep until I finish reading whatever it is. I find that reading is a nice way to calm your mind, especially at the end of the night, if that’s the sort of thing you’re into like I am.

3. WORKING OUT. Going to the gym and working out can be so unbelievably therapeutic for a person’s mind, body and soul (believe it or not). If you’re reading this and you’re not into working out at all, I can see why you would probably roll your eyes at this one, because it’s so cliché for someone to say, but I promise it’s also 100% true (if you’re into the workout at the time anyway). It’s a great stress-reliever after a long day to just go ahead and release all of your pent up frustration, aggression, or whatever the case may be for you and just take it ALL out on the weights.

4. A SKINCARE ROUTINE. Another cliché and typical suggestion to make, because it’s something that everyone always suggests, but it really is another good one and actually the one I opted to do last night. Doing a skincare routine whether elaborate or basic is so soothing and will for sure make you feel good by the end of it (to some extent anyway). I mean, who doesn’t want smooth, clear and radiant skin right? After all, it is the first thing you see of yourself, as well as the first thing others end up seeing of you, so why not make it good?

5. And finally, GETTING A MANI/PEDI. Again, another cliché suggestion, but any sort of pampering that you do for yourself whether this, a skincare routine, a haircut, etc. is sure to make you feel rejuvenated and good about yourself in some way, shape or form. I mean who doesn’t love to feel and actually get pampered, right?!

Well that’s it guys…these are things that usually tend to make me feel happy, good about myself, and productive.

Obviously there are probably a ton more, different from this list, that you would be able to think of, but the ones that I mentioned are the ones that are generally all, if not, MOST of the things I tend to gear towards whenever I’m in a funk or just looking to do some ‘me-time’ stuff.

Self-care is a form of self-love, and if you’re anything like me and tend to be super busy and on-the-go all the time, you should try to make time for it AT LEAST once or twice a week.

It really is important and needed in order for you to reflect, release, relax and rejuvenate to carry on with the rest of your week and/or start your week even.

Best Restaurants To Take Your Significant Other Out For Valentine’s Day (in NYC)

In light of Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, I thought it would be nice to share with you guys some of my suggestions for what I think are some of the best, romantic looking places in NYC to take your significant other for that special day.

And regardless of whether you’ll be celebrating it on the day of, or waiting until the weekend to do something, I think the suggestions I’m going to mention in a moment are nonetheless cute places to go to for a date night sort of thing with your significant other.

Side Note: If the types of foods served at the restaurants I’m going to mention all are similar and/or the same, that’s completely coincidental. When Diego and I go out and find these places, we’re not actually looking for any sort of particularly cultured food, it just so happens that a lot of them tend to be similar.

Now, in no particular order, here are my recommendations:

  1. Almond Restaurant

Location: East 22nd street, near Madison Square Park.

Type of food served: Bistro, French comfort food.

Ambience: Rustic, dim lit and comfortable feel.

Diego and I had come here for a date night of ours, without actually having it in mind to dine at. We kind of just stumbled upon it one night when our original dinner plans fell through, BUT, I’m kind of glad we ended up here. It was super cozy, good food and not that expensive either. Service was good, and it definitely had a romantic feel to it with the dim lighting and candles on the tables.

2. Haven Rooftop

Location: West 47th Street, on the rooftop of the Sanctuary Hotel, near Times Square.

Type of Food Served: French influenced dishes.

Ambience: Cabana styled, glassed-in rooftop spot.

I actually took Diego here for the first birthday that I had spent with him when we got together. He had mentioned to me that he really wanted to celebrate his birthday on some sort of rooftop, and since I know he’s not necessarily the party type, I did my research, found this spot and figured why not take him to a late lunch/early dinner at this popular rooftop spot?

The food was really good, and since they were just switching over from lunch to dinner, we ended up being some of the first guests here and had the place to ourself. And although I remember it being a fairly gloomy day when we came, the views from the top were still really great. Diego’s birthday is in April, so it was still pretty cool outside, but it’s closed in by glass, so it was still comfortable.

3. Molo’s Restaurant

Location: Weehawken, New Jersey. Definitely on the far side compared to all the other places I’m mentioning, but 100% worth the trip if you decide to come here.

Type of Food Served: Mediterranean eatery, specializing in seafood.

Ambience: Modern, upscale riverfront with an AMAZING view of the city.

Probably one of the, if not THE most beautiful and romantic ones I can recommend. I brought Diego here for his birthday 2 years ago and it legit left an imprint on us…I don’t typically care for seafood, but I know that he does, so I figure why not?

It was about an hour and a half drive but generally it was nice to be able to listen to music and talk. And the location itself was stunning. I remember we had arrived about half hour early, so we got to walk along this boardwalk type thing and take pictures, which was really nice. And then when we finally got to be seated, we managed to get a seat right by the window which was absolutely beautiful to see the view of the city, especially since it was late afternoon and we got to watch the sunset from inside.

The servers were super nice, quick and helpful and the food was good. Although I should mention that this is more on the pricier side, but regardless think it was 100% worth every penny. If you can, I definitely recommend checking this place out.

4. And finally, Serra by Birreria

Location: this is another rooftop location atop Eataly in the Flatiron district, right near Madison Square Park.

Type of Food Served: Italian cuisine, house brewed ales and high-end imported beer.

Ambience: At the moment it’s sort of like a themed pop-up restaurant, in that, it’s supposed to make you feel like you’re taking a trip to the Italian Alps, while also being in a Winter Wonderland sort of feel.

I suppose this is kind of cheating to some extent, because we haven’t actually tried this place just yet (we’re supposed to be going next Monday). BUT,  I found this place online and read some pretty great reviews on it. It’s apparently a pretty popular place. It seems to have some pretty good food options, and personally, I think it looks to be a pretty romantic and/or comfortable setting regardless of whether you go with a significant other or friends. I can’t wait to be able to check it out next week and actually give you guys my full opinion on it!! (Stay tuned for that 😉 )

I could literally probably go on FOREVER giving you guys suggestions of restaurants Diego and I have gone to and loved, but I think (thus far) these 4 are probably the most romantic-feeling ones that I can recommend with Valentine’s Day approaching.

*Also, all of these places take reservations, and they’re all available on OpenTable to be able to do that if you’re interested.*

Also, I’m really sorry that things like this are subjected to the New York area only, but it is where I’m from and that’s all that I REALLY know.

RANT: Catcalling

Let’s start with the obvious which is, “what exactly is catcalling?”

For those of you that don’t know and/or maybe have just not heard the term, catcalling is making a whistle sound, shouting or generally making a comment of a sexual nature to a woman passing  by. So ultimately, when you’re being harassed in the street by a guy or group of guys….

You may be thinking, why are you writing an entire blog post on something like this? And the answer is pretty simple actually, it’s because in the day and age that we live in, it’s something that needs to be brought to light and spoken about more then what it actually is.

For those of you that don’t know, I’m from the South Bronx, born and raised, where things like catcalling occur on a regular day to day basis. Obviously I know that this is something that happens universally, but I can and will only speak based off of my own personal experiences, which is what I’m doing right now.

This is a topic I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. It’s one that I’ve gone back and forth about writing for a while because it’s another one of those controversial topics. The only difference is, I’ve actually been a victim of this myself, for many, many years…since I was about 13-14 years old….I’m 23 about to be 24 in a few months….

How crazy is that to think about?

Granted, it’s not something that I’ve had to deal with every single day of my life, and obviously there are some girls/women that probably have it MUCH worse then me and others, but nonetheless I think it’s something that needs to get addressed more.

Now to some, it may just look or seem as if a girl is ONLY getting complimented by a guy, right? And for some guys/men that IS actually all that is, but for others, it’s so much more…For others, it’s more along the lines of sexual harassment then anything else.

I can remember being MUCH younger, maybe early teens, having grown ass men whistle at me, etc. and my mom simply telling me to ignore it and brush it off. Now, I’m not at all blaming her for anything, because in hindsight, I can understand why she told me to do that, but to the same extent, I could never understand how grown ass men like that, who were old enough to be an uncle of mine, or even my FATHER, was trying to hit on me like that??? I mean I was ultimately a little girl compared to them.

And Lord knows things like that have really only gotten worse with time unfortunately. Some girls (including myself) can’t even walk down certain streets without having to worry about whether or not that’s going to happen and whether or not it’s even going to be one or several guys. ON TOP of worrying about to what extent exactly they’ll take it to.

This kind of harassment has gotten to a certain point for some girls/women that not only will the guys curse them out for getting ignored or rejected, but some of them actually take it to the extreme of actually getting violent with these poor girls, and either  beating, or even worse, killing them.

Thank God it has never gotten to that extent for me or anyone that I know, but it does STILL happen and it’s DISGUSTING. It’s ridiculous that girls/women have to not only watch their backs in the streets nowadays, but also have to be ‘extra’ careful in the things they wear for fear that it may draw too much attention to them??? And not even really watch what they wear because it’s to the point that girls can look bummy as hell and it still happens to them.

Women should be able to wear (to some extent) whatever the hell they want that makes them feel pretty, sexy and/or confident without having to worry about whether or not they’re going to get harassed because of it. It’s honestly disgusting and sad that that’s the kind of would we’re living in at this point.

I’ve realized that I’ve become such an aggressive person because of things like that now, which isn’t necessarily good, but it is what it is I guess at this point.

Like, instead of simply ignoring it the way that a lot of people suggest for me to do, I end up feeding into it and them in a sense, by flipping them off in the streets when they try to talk to me, or cursing them out for staring so hard and/or trying anything, etc.

And I’m not at all suggesting for anyone reading this to do that, but that’s just where I’m at with this kind of situation, personally, from how “normal”, annoying and frustrating it’s become….

I suppose there’s no one real ‘purpose’ for this post other than me wanting to be able to rant about this thing weighing on my mind heavy lately, and the final 2 thoughts that pop into my head:

  1. Ladies…be careful out there. You’re all beautiful, and as much as we want to be treated as equals and be as free as possible, unfortunately in the day and age that we live in, we’ve got to be extra careful and safe out there in the world. So, stay pretty and please stay safe.
  2. Men….ya’ll gotta do better (not all men, but the dirtbags out there preying on little girls and grown women). Learn how to treat a woman, and learn how to respect them and their decisions if they’re not interested and/or decide to ignore you.
