How to be Productive at Home

Hey guys,

How’s everyone doing? Happy Wednesday!

By now it’s been quite a few days/weeks of us being in quarantine and working from home here in New York because la Rona (I’m actually coming up on 2 weeks this Friday), and people are definitely starting to get antsy.

Personally, the more I do it, the more I enjoy being able to work from the comforts of my own home AND do everything on my own time (for the most part).

However, the reality of the situation is that working from home can be both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because who wouldn’t want to be able to work and make money from the comforts of their own home, right? But also a curse because being TOO comfortable at home could lead to not getting  a whole lot of actual work done. Which is why I wanted to put this post together of ways to (try) staying productive while at home during this time.

  1. Wake up early

The HORROR, right? I don’t even like waking up early on regular days, so why would I want to these days that I’m home all the time?

Well, because I am technically working from home and obligated to, but the beauty about it is that I start at 9 and don’t have to worry about waking up 2 hours before to get ready, get on a train and head to work. I can get up comfortably at around 8:30, which gives me enough time to brush up, make my coffee and something to eat, feed Nala and start work.

If you don’t have to work like I do, I by NO means am suggesting for you to wake up super early at the crack of dawn, but I think waking up at like 9am is a pretty decent time to be able to get yourself going for the day and start whatever work may need to be done. Give yourself a few days of doing this to REALLY get used to it and I promise it’ll become part of your daily routine in no time. After all, the early bird gets the worm, no?

2. Create a work space for yourself *NOT in your bedroom*

For me personally, this space is my dining room. The table is large enough for all of my work stuff (laptop, paperwork, etc.) and I’ll have everything I need to get stuff done throughout the day. It’s a place comfortable enough to work, but not super comfortable to the point that I’ll get distracted with other things like I would if I were in my room.

I actually don’t even step foot into my room until I’m done with work for the day, which is after 6:30 or so. I bring everything I need downstairs so that it avoids me having to go to my room and run the risk of getting lazy/comfortable up there.

Also, I know that not everyone may have the luxury of going to a whole other floor or room of their house, but surely there is SOME type of space in your home that you can claim for a period of time to get work done. Find it, claim it, and get to work!

3. Set certain work hours for yourself

Since I’m working from home, technically my hours are still pretty set, 9am-6pm. Your hours don’t have to be nearly as long, so long as you give yourself enough time to be able to get everything done that you need to for the day. Even if it’s an hour (although hopefully it’s not that short either lol). Regardless of what it is, make those hours your permanent work hours Monday through Friday moving forward and make sure you actually put those hours to good use.

4. Create a ‘to-do’ list of things that need to get done.

I’m sure this one sounds cheesy and super obvious, but it really is true, whether it’s for schoolwork, your job or just personal errands around the house, make sure you create a to-do list of things that need to get done for the day. I personally would advise to do it the day/night before so you’re not scrambling to remember what needs to get done on the day of. This way not only are you keeping organized, but you’re also *hopefully* going to manage to keep yourself busy for a while as you’re getting things done. Also, don’t forget to try and spread certain things out so that you have a little something to do everyday to keep yourself busy since there’s no telling when all this quarantine stuff is going to be over 🤕

5. Don’t forget to set aside some free time for personal stuff that you need and/or just want to get done.

Recently for me, my “me” time will be in the morning right before I start work as I’m having breakfast and drinking my coffee, in the middle of the day at some point when I do my home workouts and after I get off work at 6-6:30pm. Those are all my personal times to be able to take care of myself, work on blog posts, new videos, IG content, etc. I take care of the necessities that I need to for work, but I’m also finding time to be able to take care of myself and get my own PERSONAL work done. If I’m not being taken care of, how can I expect everything else to be taken care of? It’s all about balance.

This was a requested post so I hope you guys enjoyed it and that it was helpful to you in some way, shape or form if you’ve been struggling to stay productive at this point in time while at home.

Keep in mind that this is and will continue to be a learning experience for us all, so if you don’t happen to be or feel super productive in the beginning of trying these things, try not to be too hard on yourself about it. Just keep at it and eventually, you’ll get yourself into a routine where all of the things I mentioned will end up becoming second nature to you.

Making The Most Out of a Bad Situation

Hey guys, how’s everything going?

I hope that you all are doing well and staying healthy and safe in the comforts of your own homes with your families, significant others, etc.

For today’s post I wanted to talk a little bit about making the best out of a bad situation, which I think we can ALL agree that we’re kind of in right now with the whole “quarantine” stuff going on.

I did a similar post to this about 2 years ago (which I’ll leave linked here if you want to check it out), and as I just mentioned, given the circumstances of where we all are right now and what’s going on in the world, I thought it was important to re-create it to some extent.

It’s awful, it’s annoying and it REALLY sucks, but in this very moment, we unfortunately cannot do much to change the ways things are other than following what medical experts and our elected officials are telling us to do which is to STAY INSIDE. Don’t go out. Don’t come into contact with too many people at a time. And try to be as smart about all this (as far as stocking up on food and necessities) as possible.

I’m not saying it’s going to be easy because it’s definitely not, but I can only continue to hope and pray that by doing all of this and following the “rules” that these officials are giving us, that it’s going to make things better with each day that passes.

Since all of this is so out of our hands and up in the air, the only thing I think we can REALLY do at this point is try to stay as busy, productive and distracted as possible while we’re stuck at home.

I for one am definitely the type that cannot stay still. Those of you that know me and/or follow me on social media know that I am always on the go, always have something going on or that I’m working on and typically tend to go stir crazy being stuck at home for more than just a day. However, under the circumstances, I don’t exactly have a choice. I/we are going to be at home for a LONG time. That being said, I’ve put together the below list of things that I plan on doing throughout this time in quarantine (aside from working lol), that also may peak your interest while being at home moving forward.

Things to do:

  • The first thing I personally am going to do is genuinely try to enjoy these first few days I’m home and off. Let’s get it out of our system whether it’s just the first day or first three. Personally I know these days are well deserved off for me, as I’m sure it’s the same for you guys as well. I’m saying to enjoy them as best you can and do nothing right off the back because realistically, when are we ever really going to get a chance like this again? Being at home, doing relatively nothing but relaxing and (more or less) not really having a care in the world. I don’t know about you guys, but I personally don’t get too many days like that in my day-to-day routine.
  • Start a new book or book series (i.e., the Twilight series, Harry Potter series, Hunger Games, Pretty Little Liars series, etc.). Something that will take you a while to get through.
  • Find and start a new TV series (or movie collection). With all of the different streaming services in the world today, it should not be difficult to find SOMETHING to watch and get into, even if you may not have cable.
  • Get into listening to Podcasts. People suggest this a lot, and when I first heard of that I was definitely like ehh, but then I started looking into it myself and finding certain ones that really peaked my interest and I got into it more and more. I would listen to them on the train going and/or coming from work. Walking home. I even used to listen to it as I was doing cardio sometimes. There are some really great and inspirational ones with amazing vibes within them (I have an entire post dedicated to my favorite ones which I’ll leave linked here if you guys want to check it out).
  • Practice Self-Care. There is no better time then right now to be able to practice self-care whether that’s taking care of your skin more regularly, giving yourself a mani/pedi, meditating, practicing yoga, etc. Take care of yourself now more than ever.
  • Home workouts. This one is SO important (for me personally anyway). One of the biggest disappointments I’ve had thus far throughout all of this is the fact that every single gym in New York is closed right now and I have no way of being able to strength train at the moment anymore. So, because of that I need to get a little creative and start to come up with a home workout routine because who knows how long I/we are going to be stuck home, but either way, summer is approaching so I’m still trying to have that ‘summer body’ mentality in mind and stay in shape.
  • Teach yourself how to cook/bake something new (or several new things). I’m actually kind of REALLY looking forward to this because I used to be so in love with the idea of cooking and baking when I was younger, I would always find and save recipes for my mom and I to be able to try making together (which we did a few times). But, as I got older, I started being more on the go and spending less time at home, which prompted me to never have time for making stuff for myself, so since I still live at home with my parents at the moment, whenever I get home at night my mom usually is the one to cook and leave stuff for me on the side. I know how to make a few things here and there, but I’m excited to hopefully take some more time out to learn how to make more meals for myself.
  • Spring cleaning!! This one is pretty big for me too because I’ve been saying for a while now that I want and need to take the time to just stay home, go through all of my clothes and what not and get rid of anything/everything that I don’t want or use anymore. SO I will 1000000% be taking advantage of this time home and finally be siting down to do that at some point. Out with the old, in with the new!!
  • Clean up and organize the pictures/videos on your phone. Since I’ve been taking my blogging and Instagram content more seriously in recent months, I’ve been taking SO many pictures. But because I end up taking so many, after I take the one or 2 that I end up using to post, I end up leaving all of the rest just kind of sitting in my camera roll from each individual shoot so there is a LOT of build in there at the moment. It is a must that I do a bit of spring cleaning in my camera roll throughout this time as well haha.
  • For my creators out there, take this time to try and plan (and execute if possible) new content!! It can be so difficult to plan out content sometimes, especially when you throw in having a 9-5, going to the gym early in the morning or right after work, balancing a relationship, friends, a home life, etc. Now is the PERFECT time to try planning out new content (whether it’s Instagram, YouTube, blog posts, etc.) for when we finally come out of quarantine. But also, try creating new content. It can be difficult because there’s only so much you can do at home, but this is the time to really try getting creative and putting things together for your personal brand or whatever you may be working on/towards.
  • and finally, take this time to RESEARCH and EDUCATE yourselves (as I obviously will myself) on all of the serious stuff going on in the world right now. Although it’s all the media seems to be talking about at the moment, I promise you that there is SO many other things going on in the world OTHER than the virus. DON’T listen to everything that news outlets and the media has to say, do your own research and help yourself understand all of this whether it’s with the virus, the financial repercussions that may or may not come out of this or all of the employment stuff going on and that will happen after all of this is over. Yes, it can be very scary and/or nerve-wrecking to read a lot of what’s going on or going to happen, but I personally would rather educate myself and somehow be prepared for what’s to come then go in blind and not know or understand half of what’s going on.

Things are SO difficult right now, but try using this time to take a step back from all your normal responsibilities for a little bit, relax, recharge and come back better then ever. Usually the new year is a time to really “start all over” and “start fresh,” but maybe THIS is what will be our fresh start.

This is the time to take advantage of all the free time we’re going to have in the coming days/weeks and do all of those things that we typically tend to put in the back burner because we “don’t have time.” Time is all we really have right now.

My Word Of The Year & Why?

I’ve been thinking a lot about this recently, ever since I started putting together the materials for my 2020 vision board at the end of December; and as I was putting everything together, I realized that a KEY TERM that I kept using throughout the board was consistency.

Super important and obvious to making anything happen and/or successful, right? Yes, but is it just that easy? No.

Let me take a few steps back and talk to you guys a little bit about my 2020 vision board first and foremost, then I want to speak about why the word ‘consistency’ is so important and going to be my word of the year.

If it may be a little bit difficult to see, I broke my goals up this year into Personal, Relationship and Business goals. Obviously ALL of the goals on the board are super important to me, and although what I’m talking about in this post is relevant to really anything, I am mainly going to be focusing on my business goals.

For my business goals, I have things on there like be consistent and better with my Instagram content, grow my blog and be more consistent, and even though I didn’t write the word ‘consistent’ in it, it was the same with hitting 1,000 subscribers on YouTube.

It wasn’t planned for me to use that word throughout them all, and I actually didn’t even realize I did that until I finished writing them all, but I think that’s just because subconsciously I KNEW that in order to do everything I wanted on there, then being consistent was what I was going to have to do, plain and simple. But, is being consistent REALLY that easy?

Consistency and Why It Isn’t Easy

As obvious and important as consistency is in relatively EVERYTHING that matters to us, is it really THAT easy? Personally, I think that it could be, but definitely not always.

I think that if you are passionate enough about something, then of course you’ll do anything in your power to get it done or whatever the case is, but just because you’re getting it done, doesn’t make it easy to actually do.

For example, with my personal business goals and work (Instagram, my blog and YouTube), I have SO many different ideas for all of those things, it’s crazy, but actually executing them and making sure it comes out exactly how I want it and being proud enough in it to actually want to make it public for you guys to see is the difficult part.

In theory, if you have an idea it should be relatively easy to just make it happen, but that’s not always the case. It could be raining so it ruins my location idea for a shoot, therefore, that day that I had planned for IG content has to get cancelled and/or postponed. My video idea could go to complete shit for one reason or another (editing program issues, equipment damage, awful lighting, the idea just doesn’t make sense, etc.). Same thing with a blog post, it’ll sound like a great idea in my head but when I FINALLY start to sit down and write it out, it makes no sense and I’m not happy with it, NOR do I have a back-up option in that moment. The list really could go on.

I know that it sounds easy to just be like, just be more consistent, and maybe for some people it really is just that easy, but for people like me (the psycho perfectionist) who only ever wants to try putting out the best possible content for my followers in all different forms as well as being proud of what I’m putting out, sometimes it’s really just not that easy. It’s definitely something that I want to work on which is why I have it on my vision board this year, but it is definitely going to be tricky. Sort of piggy-backing off of my previous post, sometimes you can plan as much as you want for these things, and things could still go wrong, making you unable to have or want to put out content for that day.

It’s a bit of a contradiction because consistency is SO important and the only REAL way to grow any sort of brand, business, etc. IS by being consistent, making mistakes, learning from them and being better, but I just wanted to let you guys know (since sometimes people don’t seem to understand it), that consistency isn’t as easy as some may think, which is why it’s something I really want and hope to work on throughout 2020.

I know what I want and I know what to do for these things, but it’s just kind of having to take it day by day, not put so much pressure on/into it, make sure I’m having fun and enjoying what I’m doing, and just kind of push to keep going and be better.
